The Longevity Challenge: Alternative Approaches to Maintaining Cash Flow in the Distribution Phase

Practitioners in FPA Chapters all over the country are reporting that, as Boomers begin to retire, the distribution phase has become an area of intense interest. Advisors face a challenge in helping their clientele spend down their portfolios appropriately. They are eager, of course, to avoid reverse dollar cost averaging when the market is volatile. And, the problem of selling assets at an inopportune time is accentuated by sequence of returns risk if the retiree begins his retirement in a bear market. Thought leaders in the field are aware of how housing wealth can mitigate the risk from both of these phenomena. Both Harold Evensky/ John Salter of Texas Tech University and Barry Sacks, a San Francisco pension and tax legal expert, published papers in 2012 in the Journal of Financial Planning demonstrating that there are fresh ways to improve cash flow survival. These investigators found that selectively using the HECM Saver as a risk mitigation tool effectively flattens volatility troughs. They proved that the low-load, low cost Saver with its non-cancellable, growing equity line can significantly impact the probability that the retiree will not run out of money. For advisors whose clientele is reaching the distribution phase, a discussion of these studies would be of real value. In addition, four Case Studies comparing retirement scenarios in Money Guide Pro will be presented. These cases studies will strengthen the practitioner’s understanding of how the “Monte Carlo Confidence Meter” improves with the judicious, conservative use of housing wealth. Lastly, there will be a concomitant analysis of the effect of various strategies on the remaining home equity.

Go Beyond Traditional Investing: Adding Alternative, Tactical and Risk Managed Strategies to your Practice (Alternatives in Insurance Investing)

Why should we consider a change in our investment portfolios? Are traditional 60% stock and 40% bond portfolios still a good starting point for investment management? Institutions have reacted to the increased volatility and inter-connection of the markets using non-traditional strategies within their overall asset allocation. What investments are they using and how can we access and incorporate these in client portfolios? The world has changed and so has investing.

Actively Seeking Active Share

Passive “index” investing has managed to capture the mindshare of many academics, the allocation models of many advisors as well as the market share of many investors. But recently, new research has emerged that confirms the existence of actively-generated alpha which identifies Active Share as the most effective predictive measurement tool to select the active mutual fund managers that are most likely to persistently outperform their passive counterparts after fees and expenses. Additionally, we discuss seven other tools essential to alpha-hunters evaluating actively-managed mutual funds: tracking error, R-squared, expense ratios, fund size, alternative investment strategies, investment horizon and market environment.

Annuities as Asset Protection Tools: A New Medicaid Planning Strategy for Your Senior Clients

As a result of the presenter’s victory in a landmark Medicaid case regarding asset protection for married couples, your senior clients may now keep far more assets than what the State had previously allowed. Now, the healthy spouse can purchase a single premium immediate annuity (SPIA) and not have it counted as assets for Medicaid eligibility for the spouse in the nursing home. You will learn how this new change expands the asset protection options you can provide your clients, the specific regulations and annuity rules you must know before recommending it, and how to determine which of your clients would benefit from this new strategy in Medicaid planning.

Social Media Dashboard & SEO Marketing

Are you designing scalable financial advice systems to compete more effectively? How sure are you that your email archiving system will work in case of a regulatory exam? Are you using strong passwords to protect client data? Advisors are getting sold on technology instead of researching what’s actually best. This session provides practical solutions. If you wonder if Microsoft is still the best operating system for you, whether to write a blog, or don’t know about how suggestion engines might transform financial advice, then this session is for you.

The Big 10 Questions Every Client Is Thinking, Even If They Don’t Ask

You’ve done your marketing correctly, and you’ve got a qualified prospect sitting in front of you ready, willing and able…Now what? Before any client feels comfortable enough to give you a substantial amount of business, you must remove all their uncertainty by answering all their questions – even if they don’t come right out and ask. Easily, effortlessly and automatically build trust, establish credibility, exude confidence, and maintain control of the interview process without being “controlling.” Transcend objections before they arise, remove uncertainty and enable clients to hire you in just one meeting. In this talk, Max reveals not only the questions, but also shows you exactly how to develop killer answers. At the end of the interview your prospect will say, “This sounds good… How do we get started?” instead of, “This sounds good…Let me think about it.”

Bridging the Gap Between Health and Wealth

Ron Mastrogiovanni will be discussing an evolving paradigm shift in financial planning: the need to integrate healthcare costs into all retirement budgets. HealthView’s research has uncovered that most of the 78 million Baby Boomers retiring over the next 20 years, holding approximately $15 trillion in assets, overwhelmingly share the same concern: rising healthcare costs. Why this sudden surge in anxiety? Because Medicare does not cover all healthcare costs in retirement and it is not free. There are premiums, coverage gaps, co-pays, other out-of-pocket expenses, and most recently, since the adoption of the Affordable Care Act, premium adjustments based on residency and means testing. Simply put, current and future Medicare subscribers will be expected to pay more based on where they live and how much they earn. And, this does not even include the most expensive of them all, long-term care. In order to help clients enjoy retirement, an advisor needs to understand healthcare cost issues and then effectively utilize capital market and insurance solutions to create a sound financial plan. Ultimately, advisors who grow to understand retiree healthcare costs will position themselves at the forefront of the profession.
